Electrical nightmare

I'm not sure what else to do at this point. About a year ago I did an engine swap in a 92 Camaro. I dropped a 350 Carb motor in place of the stock 305 TBI system. All was well until one day a few months back, I pulled into my driveway and the car suddenly died. Found out that the ignition coil had gone out, so I replaced that and she fired right up again. Not even a mile down the road the same thing happens again. I get it back home and figure out that virtually the entire car is shorted out. I have continuity through ground, ignition, and power on about 70% of the car. I have searched high and low and cannot find where the short is coming from. No fuses blow, everything continues to work just fine, but any load put on it blows the ignition coil only. I've pulled fuses, plugs, relays, and entire components trying to eliminate individual areas with no luck. The ECM was pulled out all together and the wire bundle was seperated from the rest of the underhood harness. I cant see any fused wires under the hood or in the immediate area under the dash. Does anyone have any suggestions? Can anyone clue me into a better way to trace it? I'm baffled by it and have lost nearly all patience with it at this point.

Re: Electrical nightmare

Have you tried checking the ignition switch? check for burnt or discolored terminals.

Re: Electrical nightmare

Also check the bundle near the starter. GM set the battery lug on the starter as the main power distribution block. The problem is that headers also like the real estate

Re: Electrical nightmare

Some coils run off 6 volts and had a resistor inline on older cars. Fuel injection uses 12 volts to the coil so if you dont have that resistor and using a 6 volt coil you will over heat it and kill it.

Re: Electrical nightmare

Good suggestions, but I unplugged the ignition switch at one point thinking that might have been it and still had the issue. Distribution on the back of the starter...one of the first places I checked thinking I just had a little contact to the headers. Everything under the hood is solid. I unplugged the harness under the hood through the firewall and determined that the short is coming from inside the car somewhere.
