4th Gen dash gauge swap questions

Hey guys,
I'm waiting on the final bit to do my custom dash swap and just need to have a few things cleared up before I do the swap.

I have the 97lt1 v8 cluster with digital odometer.
I have a Vehicle speed sensor or the transmission to replace my cable.
And I will pickup whatever gear or optical dealy I need to get the right reading from the transmission.

Is there anything else I need?

I've seen people say you need the speed buffer box, but can I either use the one on the back of my cable speedo gauge, or can i keep the cable and that box attached and just use the speed wire from that to run the gauges without the need for the buffer box?

i'm using 165ECM on 350tpi with t700r4 auto.

Any help is greatly appreciated, preferably from someone who's done this swap again.
