Speedo Cable (at Transmission) Replacement Question

We are replacing the speedo cable on my 1989 Camaro RS 305.
The old cable was broken off at the transmission plug end. Part of the cable was still stuck there where it plugs into the transmission. We ended up pulling the whole metal transmission plug out. The cable piece would not come out and it pulled the whole thing loose with it. We can't seem to get it completely back in. Is there any sort of trick to getting it back in? We don't want to force it and break something on the inside.
Everything else is ready to go and reconnected at the dash.
Any helpful tips or tricks would be appreciated!

To fully seat the sleeve and gear, you may need to jiggle/wiggle the piece a bit so that the driven gear mates with the drive gear.
