windshield wipers?

i have a 1991 firebird. my windshield wipers only work sometimes, the only way i can get them to start working is to push on the wiper fluid button thing on my colum then they will work and keep working til i shut off the car or drive it for a while then stop. sometimes they move just a lil bit even when doing that then quit then i have to keep pressing on the washer button or push it the otherway sometimes to basically jumpstart the wipers and get them going. its a new steering colum we put in weeks ago and everything in the wheel seemed fine, i replaced the pulse board on the motor with one from a junk yard cause they werent working at all and they worked fine after that for a few weeks and now there doing this. any help would be great thanks

Re: windshield wipers?

I had the same issue while tracing the wiring out to my wipers cause I did a harness swap and the wiper wires were not in the same place on the connector. In my case, it was caused by the solenoid inside of the wiper motor was not unlocking the motor so it could move. I had to push the wiper arms down all the way before they would unlock and work. Worked till I shut them off, then back to the same issue. The solution was that I was trying to make the wipers work while I had the pump off. For what ever reason (grounding or binding issue would be my guess) it was happening cause I had the cover off. As soon as I put the cover back on, it works perfect again. Now since you said you replaced the PCB for the int. wiper feature, I would assume something might not be tight enough inside and is causing the same issue I had. Might want to go back and double check all your screws are tight inside, as well as nothing broke, and that the washer pump is on tight. If everything is OK, would imagine the unlocking solenoid is bad/sticking. Might give it a good spray with some electrical cleaner and see if it frees up. Might try some spray lube as a test also after cleaning it. If nothing helps, probably have to replace that motor assembly. $$$ unless junkyard special.

Good hunting!
