Power steering press switch.

I have a 1987 Camaro , Anybody know what the power steering pressure switch is for. According to parts store's it is only on the 305 with A.C. and not on the 350 with A.C. I am going to replace the steering gear and figured I would change the hose's at the same time.I can't seem to find out any info in the shop manual, and I am having a very hard time finding someone that has this 2 piece hose set up.

Re: Power steering press switch.

Some cars had a presure sensor on the steering box that sensed when the steering pressures were higher, and thus the computer would increase the idle a tad to compensate for the lower idle from the belt drag.

Re: Power steering press switch.

Is this switch something I could bypass if I cant find the right hose's ? Seems this would only be used at idle or possibly in parking lots.

Re: Power steering press switch.

I'm unsure what the switch has to do with the hoses - all the switches I've seen are in the unit, not in the hoses - so I'm lost on what your issue is exactly.

Re: Power steering press switch.

On my car you have the high pressure hose from the pump to the steering gear. Before the hose connect's to the housing there is a sensor that the tube connects to, and then from the sensor there is a small piece of hard line that connects to the steering gear. So I actually have a 3 piece high pressure line.

Re: Power steering press switch.

Reviving this old thread.
I also wondered what the heck this switch was for, and why it was on my 91 RS LO3 and not on my 91Z. Seems the switch, the psps did increase idle a tad when pressure in the power steering line was high... like in a parking lot as stated above. It also cuts the AC clutch to prevent the car from stalling. It is a simple 12V to ground switch so easy to test the switch and the car's response. The correct hose for the cars with the switch is the Edelmann71422. Without the switch you need Edelmann 71094
