Headlights, well lack of them!

My headlights wouldn't go up so I called my mechanic and he said that I could just crank them up manually. That does not work, what is wrong with them. This blond is getting ticked at this car!

Re: Headlights, well lack of them!

There's a vendor here (I think) that makes a $20'ish kit to fix this. There are a couple of parts inside that wear out and cause what you are experiencing. It's common and an easy fix.

Click on some of the vendor logos on the right of your screen and look for headlight parts and you'll see the kit to fix this.

Re: Headlights, well lack of them!

I have this very same problem on my '85 T/A. The headlights go up and down just fine with the switch but not manually with the ****.

Re: Headlights, well lack of them!

I'm I to understand that I am UNABLE to drive this at night until I get them fixed? So if a gear goes out so they will not go up and down by the switch what the heck good is the **** to manually do it! OK I know their could be electric problems.....but still, come on!

Re: Headlights, well lack of them!

Those ***** are junk by now (stripped out). Pull them off and use a pair of pliers on the shaft underneath. Oh, and then unplug the motors to keep them from coming back down (if they're going to) when you turn the lights off the first time. :edit: And don't worry that not having the ***** is going to hurt the motors. I never knew there were ***** on the motors until I bought a used one due to the issue mentioned below, and never had a problem with the motors working in the 8 years I've had my car (except for those plastic bushing things breaking).

Be warned that if the motors need to be rebuilt that the screws holding the motor together (3 in the side housing and 2 on the motor can at the top) most likely will break. If not, use anti-seize to prevent this in the future.

Re: Headlights, well lack of them!

I used the top down solutions parts / fix and they are new again... the pieces the round bushings they replaced had long dried up and turned to powder (you'll find plenty inside the motor)... but after fix, better than new...
