Mystery wire!

Finishing up my engine swap.... after pulling the old motor (305 TPI) I discovered a 'mystery wire' just hanging about. It's brown, 16ga (?) and exits the harness at the same location as the group of wires that go to the starter. The end was cut and spiced onto another wire sometime before I got it, in total it's about 2 feet long after exiting the harness. The end of the spliced-on wire is a clean cut, so I don't believe it's been hooked up to anything since I bought the car.

Anyone know what this is? I've been staring at schematics since I discovered it but can't figure out it's original purpose. TIA!

Only brown wire I can think of is for the alternator at this moment. What year is the car?

Re: Mystery wire!

It's a 91. 5.0 TPI (now 5.7). Alt has a multi wire plug connection on top, wires there are inact, and a heavier guage wire from a terminal lug direct to the batt. She was fine electrically...

I'll have to get under my 'new' RS today. It's a '92. With any luck I'll find a brown wire exiting the harness w/ the cluster of wires that go to the starter... then I can just follow it. But, the way my luck has been running lately... LOL.

Re: Mystery wire!

Any chance this goes to the radiator fan relays? I'm looking at the wiring schematics, it shows this as a brown wire. Old owner set fans up to run constant... I'll check the relays and make sure they are working, then see about energizing and testing that way. I'd like to get the fans running as they should anyway, and haven't gotten to that yet.
