carbed swap alternator issues
carbed swap alternator issues
just finished my 89 camaro rs, it has a 377 and i stuck with its v-belt setup, so i used a older style 3-wire alternator (one large red wire and a two wire plug) and my batt. isn't charging, when at idle, if i disconnect battery terminal the rpm rises, so it seems as if the alternator is working a little. the battery is good for sure and i even tried a new one. It just had me wondering because i pulled the motor with a truck and never had charging issues. So could it be a to low of amps? for the camaro, it was in a more simple 1968 truck

Does it charge if ur above idle? Just make sure that the bat wire is running to the battery and the red wire from the two wire plug goes to a circuit that is only hot when the key is on. The other wire is not necessary. It is typically used for an idiot light. As long as it is hooked up like that u wont have any problems. Ive wired a lot of them up before and never had any issues except when I ran across a bad alt. Or bad wire.

ok so i switched wires and worse and i switched back and if i drive without using accessories then it stays at about 11v which barely starts so probably worn out alternator

thats what i would think. might be worth taking off and taking it down to the local auto parts and see if they can bench test it.
