Have to flick ignition for fuel gauge to work?

so my car picked up a problem today, when i turn it on the gas gauge will read then slowly it will drop down to 0.

i have to flick the ignition for it to pick up and start reading again.

My car is a 1986 iroc, could it be a bad ground? if so what wire can i ground out to provide a more solid connection? or what could it be?

Sounds like ground.
On my truck had similar problem. Chased grounds and connections.
Turns out the solder on wires for floater, severed. It was a contact issue at floater wiring in the tank
