Fuel relay

So I learned from a friend of mine tonight that I need a relay for my fuel pump and gauge. I bought the car from a kid that thought it would go faster if he cut out all the wires out. He made the car a carbed car. He had all the intentions of just racing the car so he cut EVERYTHING!! I have been putting her back together piece by piece, wire by wire for over the last year and a half. I own an 87 Trans Am. I have no working gauges on my dash board exept the volt meter. I do; however, have aftermarket gauges. It never really bothered me not to have a fuel gauge but, now it's getting to be a pain in the butt to have to go and refuel and find out that I had plenty of fuel to go about my buisness for the day. I have put a bigger and better carb on her and she uses a little more fuel. So! With all that BS being said. I wanna know if any one knows how to wire the relay back in the car? What color wires do I look for? I only need the gauge wires as this motor has a manual pump on it. How do I wire up the relay to get power? Any and all help will be greatly useful!! Thanks in advanced!!

Re: Fuel relay

Personally, I don't know why you need a relay to run your guages.. From + wire to the guages through ignition switch will turn them off and on. It is just more wiring under the dash. The Fuel sender doesn't require alot of power to run.. I have included a sample wiring diagram of how to wire a 30/40 amp relay though if it helps.. If you want me to draw one up on windows Paint to clarify, please just ask..

Re: Fuel relay

Thanks! My friend told me that the relay also runs the fuel gauge. I'm not a smart mechanic when it comes to this relay stuff. He said that the relay draws three amps to run the fuel gauge. It's the middle relay on the firewall near the break booster! I have an aftermarket fuel gauge mounted on my piliar but when I wired it to the wires coming out of the hump in the rear, I get noting in the "on" position but, When the key is in the "acc" position, the gauge returns slowly back to half tank. That's what I got. So my buddy was talking about his TA's fuel pump going and he told me about the relay. I know this site is full of info and that's why I came here!! LOL!! Thanks again, Billy.
