Re: Upgrade to delay wipers?
The switch needs to be replaced along with the motor (or just the black cover if you can find one in good shape). To do both, you need to rent a steering wheel puller and lock plate remover to get at the switch.

88+ used a different motor with external washer pump (in the washer bottle)... The connectors are different, and you would need to snag the harness along with the motor.

Re: Upgrade to delay wipers?
Keep in mind that if you go to get an 88+ motor (as you will notice the big 6-pin connector at the top left when looking at it from the front of the car), you need to get the washer bottle going with it... Your existing washer pump WILL NOT work without some fabrication.

Re: Upgrade to delay wipers?
Make this upgrade as easy on yourself as you can.
The turn signal stalk, the "switch" and wiring harness inside the column, and the Wiper Motor Cover are what you will need.
Keep it as simple as possible....... IMO It's a LOT easier to simply replace the whole column than it is to pull the switch from a donor column, then install it into the original column. ( you can't just pull off the turn signal lever and replace it with a "delay" type lever. )
Use an 84-87 wiper motor and stay away from the 82-83 & the 88-92 versions. Why deal with re-wiring a system that doesn't properly interchange when you can get the correct Plug-&-Play type.
There's no way to deturmine if a wiper motor (cover) is a delay version or not by looking at it. The delay and non-delay parts look identical. The only way to know for sure is to see it in operation. Sure; if your in the bone yard you can check out the signal stalk in the junk car - but there's no knowing if the previous owner installed the wrong motor sometime in the past. If a non-delay motor (cover) is used on a delay system the LOW and HIGH will operate normally - but the wipers will stop while in action as soon as the stalk is placed into delay mode.
Hope this helps !
