bad igniton switch?

I am going to look at this 87 camaro tomorrow. The kid told me he thinks the ignition switch is bad. He said the car starts but the starts stay engaged and kills the battery. Does this sound like a bad switch and if so How can i by pass it just so i can get it home?

Re: bad igniton switch?

I would take one of those manual starter buttons to by pass the switch, turn the key to the ON postion, then (if the started didnt engage) use the manual start switch to turn the starter.

Here is the switch I was talking about. switch

You have to go under the car to hook it up anyway so just as easy ( cheaper) to just run a wire from the starter solenoid
( purple wire ) up to the battery.
Touch wire to batt Pos terminal and engine should crank

He says the starter is not disengaging ;
meaning the Ign switch is not returning back to the off position and cutting power to the starter once the engine has started

Or the starter/flexplate is toast. Either way, now it's also time to check the starter gear and flexplate for damage and chewed teeth.

Or as in a recent post on here the starter not being shimmed for the correct clearance so the gear would not release
