Starter and Horn Issue

Hi guys,
Here is my issue. I have an 88 IROC 350 auto and since I bought the car the horn has not worked. Today i took off the horn from the stock steering wheel to clean the contacts to see if that would fix my problem. The yellow wire inside the steering wheel touched the metal on the steering wheel itself and I heard a clicking sound.
I put everything back together and the car would not start! The car was just running 5 minutes before that and it fired right up. Now it wont even turn over. I heard the fuel pump kick on and the gauges all moved when I turned the key. Also, the accessories turned on too. My battery is only a little over a year old and has never been an issue.

Is there a relay I should check? My car is an 88 so is there a VATS system on it? I looked at the fuses and none of them were blown. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Re: Starter and Horn Issue

Does anyone have a diagram for the horn on my car? Or a diagram for the ignition? After reading some posts on here I plan on checking the park-neutral switch, the relay for the horns, and the starter solenoid.
I feel like there must be a short circuit somewhere, the horn relay shouldnt effect the ignition power should it?

Does anyone have any suggestions I can try?

Using a voltmeter or test light (the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) probe the 10 AWG yellow wire coming out of the steering column connector.

Is there power there when you try to start the car?

Happy Racing!

Re: Starter and Horn Issue

I figured out my problem! The starter solenoid went bad. I checked the voltage from the column, at the park neutral switch, and had power at both places when the key was turned. Also had power at the purple wire at the solenoid. Tried tapping the side of the solenoid with a block of wood and a hammer and it worked! Car turned right over and started....That solution worked long enough for me to drive to the garage and have them install a remanufactured starter and solenoid. Runs great now!
