Electrical mystery

I have been having an on going issue with keeping my Batt charged and working. there is something drawing power from the batt but I have no idea what it is. i just replaced the batt cable that goes to the starter because it broke and was sparking. before that i cant go more then a day without the batt dying. after fixing the cable it was holding a charge for 2 maybe 3 days in between driving it. now its just over night. what should the draw voltage/amps be when you disconnect the neg cable and hold a volt meter between the batt and that neg batt cable. any ideas what the heck is going on.

Re: Electrical mystery

For the battery to go dead that fast, I doubt it's the ECM drawing that much current/voltage. If you're seeing a full 12 volts, you can isolate the circuit by pulling fuses.

Don't forget to isolate the alternator as well to see if the draw is there.

Have you checked the alternator to confirm that it's charging? Put the voltmeter across the battery with the engine running ad see what kind of reading you get and report back. It should be anywhere between 13v-14v.

Re: Electrical mystery

Alt and batt both were tested and work fine. Batt was low on charge so I charged it. There are new ground cables from the engine to the fire wall and new neg ground cable to the batt

Re: Electrical mystery

I would isolate the battery by removing it from the car or just disconnect it. Next take a digital volt meter and record the value. Let it sit over night or even a few days. You should see the same value on both readings.

Before you disconnect I would start the car and take a reading. If you see 14ish vdc you should have a good alt.

If you haven't taken these exact steps yet then don't go any deeper into the car.

Did you take the car to a shop to get it tested?

The only thing I haven't mentioned is a load test. The shop usually preformes this. I don't really trust the shops.

The part that raises a red flag is the fact that you needed to charge your battery.

Good luck

Re: Electrical mystery

Well being that in the last 3 years I've had to replace it 4-6 times I think there is something going on. It might have been the broken batt cable shorting out the batt but there has to be a reason for the draw on the batt while not running

Which batt was shorted out? The one that's in the car at the moment?

I understand what your saying about replacing the batt. Wow there something not right. 4-6 times is crazy!
