Need help interpreting wiring diagram

I am trying to test the wiper motor for my 89 IROC. In the attached doc at the bottom of page 2 (figure 2) there is a wiring diagram for doing a Low Speed test on the wiper motor using an external 12 volt source. So I was going to use my car battery and connect test leads from the battery terminals to pins 2 and 3 in that diagram where it says "12 volt". I assume it doesn't matter which pin gets the positive or negative as long as I complete that circuit? Is my thought process correct here?

As for the rest of the diagram, I am just not sure what I need to do. Can anyone provide some guidance? I am not completely ignorant on electronics, having done some very basic wiring and I have used a voltmeter for some basic checks, but I am not good at interpreting wiring diagrams like this. I would really appreciate some help as I need to get the car to pass state inspection and the malfuctioning wipers are not going to cut it.

Re: Need help interpreting wiring diagram

ok, what you need to do is put the positive on 2 AND 3. the negative goes on 7, and you need to put a wire between 1 and 8. that will get you low speed. high speed, the positive goes on 2 and 9. does the motor not work at all when it's in the car? sometimes the grounding tab breaks off. if you know how to use a multimeter set it for continuity, and go from the metal motor case to the ground. if it doesn't beep your ground is broken.

Re: Need help interpreting wiring diagram

Thanks so much for the help there! I am out of town for a few days now but will try it when I get back and let you know. The motor was working on high speed only for the most part and when you tried low it would MAYBE start after a few mins. I suspect it is the switch but I want to verify that the motor works on all speeds first before I go and buy a new switch.
