New to the group and I have few questions

Hi everyone!
Just bought my first Firebird, an 89 Formula with a 305 TPI and a 5 spd. and I have a question. The car cranks over but does not fire, if you give it a snort of starting fluid it fires right up and dies. I bought a set of noid lights and checked the injectors and didn't get any pulse. I checked all the fuses and there all good. I purchased and ignition module and pick up coil for the distributor and started to change them....when I remove the three screws from the toothed? ring and lifted it from the distributor the magnetic ring underneath fell apart. Does anyone know what the magnetic ring is called and where can I find one? Does it sound like I'm heading in the right direction in my troubleshooting?
I don't know much about GM's as I've always been a fan of the Blue Oval (gasp!) lol but I fell in love with this car..
Thanks for the help!

That is called the RELUCTOR.

It’s purpose it to induce a voltage across the Pickup Coil.

Re: New to the group and I have few questions

if it fired up on starter fluid then no your not. (but now you have to fix that )
check for 12V at your injectors(the ecm grounds them to fire them)
also the TPI fires the injecors in a batch mode. 4 off of one pin of the ECM and 4 off another pin. (my bird was running on 4 cylinders when I got it. thanks to a wire that was bad... drove me batty until I realized the above)
Pull one inj connector. if you have 12V on one pin of connector with the key on. your ecm could be bad, or wiring, or...
after your sure you have 12v at injector you might wnat to post in the TPI part of hte forum
this is a big help
