fuel gauge not working properly

Sorry for posting this in the carburetor section. I just used a multi meter on the one red wire coming out of the gas tank (because my car was swapped to a carb by the last owner and they cut the pink tan and black wires that went to the old tank) When i measured the voltage on the pink wire coming from the dash it measured 5 volts. I thought the gas tanks operated on about 3 volts. If thats true how could i lower the current? The fuel sending unit is good because it read around 70 on the ohm meter and im also pretty sure the sending pump is working correctly because the fuel level was working until i put that new intellitronix dash in.

A 300 Ohm Resistor should put you just below 3 Volts, if your getting 5 volts. Although, I'd probably try to figure out why you're getting 5 volts first though! Good luck!
