Please help!! I have an 87 iroc-z with a 350 ramjet crate motor that now has 7000 km on it. I turn my key on and fuel pump does not prime and wont start. Next day I do it again and it primes and fires up perfect. Another day later fuel pump does not prime again and wont start. Now today it primes and starts again. My thoughts are fuel pump relay or fuel pump starting to go. I dont want to replace everything. Any help?

Re: fuel pump not priming
Relay is the easiest to replace and find out whether it continues with intermittent starts. I hope that's it, but if the fuel pump hasn't been changed out on an '87 it's probably getting ready to die. Good luck.

Search is your friend.

Check resistance of the pump during the no-start condition. Could be heat-soak on the pump. Could be a bad relay.

This quick-to-build assembly will tell you.

Grab a piece of sheet metal, drill a few holes, mount a few LEDs and you’re good-2-go.

You can use LEDs with built-in resistors so they’re ready to use with 12 volts.

Wire A — Connect to pin A of the pump relay.

Wire D — Connect to pin D of the pump relay.

Wire E — Connect to pin E of the pump relay.

Wire P — Connect at the pump.

Mount the panel in the cockpit.

Double-sided tape will work because it’s a temporary panel.

Now, when the problem occurs, you merely have to glance at the panel to see where the problem is.
