Headlight dimmer

Hey guys I have a 91 Z and I think the headlight dimmer switch might be broken. I can't get the lights to switch from low beam to high beam. How do I get into the steering column?

Re: Headlight dimmer

You don't have to.

The dimmer switch is on top of the column, down at the bottom, just a few inches above where it goes through the firewall. Those almost never break. Most likely all you need to do is adjust it: loosen its mounting screws, slide it up toward the steering wheel ¼" or so, and re-tighten the screws.

Re: Headlight dimmer

If you have a tilt steering wheel, try pulling down on it then using the switch. A lot of times the tilt steering wheels wear the housing that holds the pin out, allowing for enough slop to not properly actuate the dimmer switch.

Re: Headlight dimmer

My dimmer switch rod had worn a hole the base of the housing on my Formula. I clipped off an electrical butt connector that was bigger than the hole and placed it at the end of my dimmer rod so that it wouldn't push through. Been working fine ever since.
