8.4 volts at fuel pump

As the title states I am only getting 8.4 volts at my fuel pump. I am getting the full 12 at the orange wire on the fuel pump relay. I ran a wire from the positive terminal on my battery to the red wire on the relay, still only 8.4 volts at the pump. I can't find an inline fuse anywhere near my battery.

The check engine light has been on for a few weeks now. I'm ordering a GM OBD1 code reader in two days and I will post what codes it is reading. I'm also ordering a new pump as well since my current one was dying anyway.

Re: 8.4 volts at fuel pump

Could be a bad ground if you are reading to the frame or could be a bad connection, probably where the fuel pump plugs into the harness. Could be a bad connection at the relay load side (relay plug) or could be the relay itself. You just need to trace the voltage from the relay back to the fuel pump and see where you are dropping voltage.

ordering a GM OBD1 code reader
Paper clips are plentiful enough and readily available in most places, that special orders aren't usually necessary.

Al hit the diagnosis method on the head: start at the batt and follow the signal through all the parts and pieces (fuses, relays, connectors, different color wires, whatever) on the 12V side. Should me no more than a tenth of a volt drop across any of those things; i.e. if there's let's say 13.8 going into the part, should be no less than 13.7 coming back out. Then, make sure that the ground side of the pump is within a tenth of a volt or so, of the same voltage as the neg batt terminal.
