Power Outside Mirror

On my '83 Trans Am, the passenger side outside mirror only moves up/down, using the switch. It will move side-to-side by pushing on it. Driver side is OK, all ways, so I'm guessing it isn't the switch.

Looking at my shop manual, it seems like the mirror glass and some other stuff just pops off of a mount inside the mirror housing. Has anyone done this? How hard do you have to pry?

Also, is there a troubleshooting guide someplace? I haven't found anything here or elsewhere on the i'net.
Thanks

It’s still possible it’s a faulty switch because some contacts are exclusive to Left Mirror or Right Mirror function.

Connect
WHITE pin H to +, light blue to , then reversing polarity will produce left&right movement in the Right Mirror if the motor is OK.

Thanks for the reply. I took a better look at my shop manual and the schematic shows what you said. I'll probably get into this this winter when the car is off of the road.

Have you ever pulled the mirror out of the housing? If I have to get into that area I'm wondering how hard it is to pull out.
Thanks for your help.

That info would be correct only for the later style of electric mirror motor (beginning with the 89 model year). The 1982-88 mirror plastic backing plate is attached to the motor with a single screw behind the mirror glass. You have to break the mirror glass to access or repair the motor. On the 89-92 mirror motors there is a cross-shaped piece that snaps into two molded slots on the back of the plastic mirror backing plate.

Re: Power Outside Mirror

Thanks for the heads up. I just looked and can see a Phillips screw next to the threaded shaft. I guess I'll check voltage after the switch before I try at the mirror.

It all sounded so easy in the manual.
Thanks.
