Fuel gage and speedo not working
Hello everyone, I've had this project for a long time now and I finally got it running, it is an 88 firebird that had a 2.8 and I put in a 305 carb motor and 700r4 tranny that had electric assist shift. I ordered a torque convertor lock up kit, but when I removed wires from ecm to clean it up, I removed the ones that went to the tranny, so probably the speed sensor or whatever. How will I hook up the torque converter kit to have a working speedo. Also the fuel gage is reading full and it doesn't have a quarter tank. I. Took out the two wires for the electric fuel pump because I ran a hose for the mechanical one in the 305. I kept the wire to the float in the tank. Does it ground to the tank itself? Thank you, please help

Re: Fuel gage and speedo not working
There is a plethora of information about the fuel gauge not working. It is either a ground problem or the sending unit is bad. After I replaced my fuel pump I discovered that my fuel sending unit spontaneously stopped working and I had to replace it. I think If you had the sending unit and pump out then the sending unit went bad, If you didn't it's probably a ground issue.

PS , when the circuit goes "open" , as in there is no ground for this example , the gauge shows past F . If the wire going to the sender were to become "shorted" to ground before it gets to the sender , the gauge will show past E .

Re: Fuel gage and speedo not working
Thanks for the help. I only took the ground wire off the fuel pump to the top of the sending unit, as in, I kept the blue wire that goes to the sender, and when I removed the electronic fuel pump, I took the red and black wire out to where they plug into the tank. The wiring to the sending unit is still all there. So does that little 8 or so inch piece still have to be in there? And does anyone have an idea on the whole electric speedo part?
Thank you all

Re: Fuel gage and speedo not working
What I don't understand is that it's a brand new sending unit, all the wires going to the sending unit are there. The wires I removed were the ones directly from the fuel pump to the top of the sending unit. If I kept the black wire going from the fuel pump, it would be hooked up to nothing. And the only wire from the guage sender "blue" is still connected but there is no black wire from the guage sender. I'm so confused

And it is past f so its not grounded but if I just grounded the black wire to the body would that work maybe?

Update, orange bird, you hit it right on the head, I took out the sending unit, and there it was, i saw a pigtail on the bottom side of the sending unit where the ground had plugged in and spliced to the fuel pump. i re plugged in the wire just from the connecter to the pigtail on the sending unit and BAM! it worked, thank you very much for the help.
