Fog light switch wiring diagram
Hey folks
I have searched this site and google. Does anyone have the wiring diagram for the fog light switch from a 1986 to 90 trans am? I have the switch and the plug cut out from a car but not sure which connection goes were. There are 5 connections to the switch. I would really appreciate a detail layout of this wiring setup. thank you.

I've attached an excerpt from the 1988 Firebird Service Manual (cannot post the whole here as it is 128 MB). See page two.

Re: Fog light switch wiring diagram
purple - goes to the relay then on to the lights.
Grey goes to the instrument panel for lighting at night.
Black - is ground.
Brown - ??
Brown/White - ??
I got a pre built harness with relay and fuse. It has 4 connections:
White wire to switch,
another white wire that goes to the plus side of the fog lights.
Black wire for ground for the relay and the lights
Red Wire with fuse on it for power

Re: Fog light switch wiring diagram
Ok I need to know how to setup aftermarket lights to the factory switch using an aftermarket relay. The drawing shows one connection going to the head lights. I know why but I don't want that. I want this to be independent wiring that can utilize the factory switch.
So is there any info on that kind of setup please? thanks

Re: Fog light switch wiring diagram
I guess know one has done this before. I find several ppl on this site and other sites asking the same question I see nothing but convoluted answers.
The diagram shows the brown/white going to the fog light relay then the head lights.
There has to be a way to use the factory 5 prong switch with an aftermarket relay and fog lights. If anyone know please help, I have my car ripped apart and its getting late in the day.
Grey - + to dash lighting
Black - Ground
Purple - to fog lights, to port 86 on relay, YES?
Brown - Dimmer + YES?
Brown/White - spliced to light green wire on head lights YES? (NO RELAY CONNECTION)
For relay:
85 to ground
86 to purple wire on harness YES?
87 to lights
30 to fuse, to Battery
thanks to anyone who can confirm.

Re: Fog light switch wiring diagram
I guess nobody knows. So I will wire it up and confirm my findings. Slight change, Here is what I am going to do:
Black - Ground
Purple - to relay #86
Brown - to dark green/white wire on head light switch
Brown/white - to light green wire head light dimmer switch coming from steering column
Grey - to Grey wire on hatch release or defogger switch
For relay:
85 to ground
86 to purple wire on fog light switch
87 to lights
30 to fuse, to Battery
If works will confirm.

Re: Fog light switch wiring diagram
Well I do know that the dash light on the switch and internal dash dimmer do work. But not the lights. No power coming from the purple wire when the switch is turned on.
The confusion here is the brown and brown/white wire I believe. Maybe I need to swap them... come on anyone please???

Your main problem is you only have half of the wiring diagram.

I'm a bit confused as to your wiring. I once took apart the switches for cleaning and I took a note as for the wiring, it's attached. It's the view onto the switch from the connector side, the white circle is that plastic prong. As you can see, the colors are different from what you are telling.
It would help me if you post a picture of your wiring with the relay.

Re: Fog light switch wiring diagram
Yes and it was helpful thanks!
But I am down to the brown wire and brown/white wire. The diagram you sent shows the brown/white wire attached to the relay in the factory version. I am not doing that. I have a separate relay that is part of a wiring kit that includes all the connections and basic switch for standard 3 connection fog light setup.
So I know grey and black set correct, I have the illumination and the internal dimmer working on the switch. What I don't have is power to the lights or the amber on/off light on the left side of the switch showing its on or off. My thinking is the brown and brown/white wire are not connected right. The purple wire should get power when the switch is on which powers the relay then the fog lights, right?
Unless I have this wrong.

Purple is only for that amber light, so if you give 12 V to purple and have black connected to ground then the status bulb lights up, that's all

brown and brown/white is the switch. if you press the fog light button brown and brown/light are shortened together. If you press the off button the two disconnect

Ok so this wrong too for me I bet. I understand now how they are supposed to work but what wires do they go to on the car/relay?

So basically I need to figure out where these wires go:
Purple - to what connection in the car or relay
Brown - same as above
Brown/white - same as above

Re: Fog light switch wiring diagram
actually to get this whole thing working you just need brown and brown/white.
purple, gray and ground ist just for prettiness but they don't do anything to power the fog lights.
Basically iI'd do that: get your fog lights powered without the switch, then cut one of the +12V wires and connect the two ends to brown and brown/white. The wire you'd loop the switch into would be the one that goes to the relay coil.

Re: Fog light switch wiring diagram
I want the whole thing working right for aesthetics.
So for the sake of how this works.
Brown gets 12v+
Brown/white goes to relay
Purple ties into brown/white to light up when fog lights are on
Right?

Sure! I'm picky about this myself. But first we need to get the fog lights working, the rest will follow.

Re: Fog light switch wiring diagram
ok from that diagram I assume the following, correct me if I'm wrong:
red and black go to 30 or 87 respectively on the relay
then there are the white/black wires to the lights.
That switch is connected to the relay coil on 86
the other side of the coil (85) goes to ground as well, right?

If that should be correct, then you would need to make sure you get 12 V to the red wire before and after the fuse

brown then connects to a constant 12 V source
brown/white goes to 86
that 85 (I guess black on the aftermarket harness) goes to gorund

red wire that has a fuse on it that goes to + constant
The ground wire consists of 2 black wires on one connection, one goes to ground other is ground to the lights
1 white wire goes to the lights on one relay connection
1 white wires one another connection on the relay goes to the original switch
Unfortunately its not a standard relay pattern and the connections are not numbered.

Re: Fog light switch wiring diagram
THATS IT!!! WHOOOO HOOOO
for all that ask here you go if you want to hook up a Trans Am factory switch (using an aftermarket relay) which sits on the left side of the dash below the steering wheel:
Grey - to internal dimmer, I jumped it off a grey wire on the defogger switch (for switch illumination, works with internal dimmer dash wheel)
Black - Ground, again jumped it off black on the same switch above
Brown - To 12v power source (I jumped it off the green/white wire on the head light switch, this will only allow them to power on with low beam, if you want all the time, go to battery + connection)
Brown/White to # 86 on aftermarket relay which goes to fog lights
Purple - joined to Brown/white wire (illuminates amber light on the switch indicating lights are on)
The aftermarket relay connection:
85 to ground
86 to brown/white wire on fog light switch
87 to lights
30 to fuse, to Battery
