Fuel Gauge stuck past full

The other day, I went for a drive to work and back and my fuel gauge was working poperly, then I got home and had the idea that I wanted to change the color of my instrument cluster lights from the red LED's that were put in it from the guy before me to the stock 194's. Since then i've taken out numerous red LED lights and bulbs, accessories with lights to free up the voltage amount inside the car, because I figured all of the unnecessary lights in the interior of the car was making the brights flash like they usually do.

Anyway, I had the cluster outside and didn't know what I was doing , I removed all of the gauges and reattached them after learning that I could just unscrew the bulbs from the back. I reattached everything the way they came out. I put the cluster back in and screwed it all back in and then my fuel gauge skyrocketed way above F and won't come back down.

I just need to know if I fried the sender unit, the gauge itsself, or if the printed circuit board on the back of the instrument cluster is fried.

any help is appreciated.

It's probably ok, take the lens off, move the needle down and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't, pull the gauge out then reinstall it making sure that the prongs engage properly.

It's funny you say that because that's exactly what I did after I waited a little bit after I got home. I wanted to be sure that it was connecting properly.

But alas, no, it's still stuck way past full.

Re: Fuel Gauge stuck past full

My fuel gauge sticks past full until half a tank, then reads properly from there. For a non DD, it's not really an issue. ......been that way for years....

Re: Fuel Gauge stuck past full

There's an open in the wire/circuit between the sending unit (in the tank) and the gauge or an open in the ground to the gauge.

GM gauges read empty when the sender is at zero ohms, full when the sender is at 90 ohms. If the gauge is pegged with the tank less than full, the gauge is seeing infinite ohms (open circuit).

Go back and make sure that you have the gauge plugged into the cluster properly. Also, check to make sure you didn't damage the printed circuit when you plugged the cluster back into the dash.
