1986 Performance Sound diagnostics

I know enough about electronics to be seriously dangerous - soldered a few megasquirts and fixed some TV's and other consumer electronics. Electrical troubleshooting is no problem.

I have the amplified mini subwoofer's in my sail panels... Performance Sounds. Gain control with on/off switch, etc. I press the on/off button and the gain control lights up. Nothing else happens. All the normal speakers work.

Does anyone have any experience with what usually fails on these? I'm guessing I should pull the amp from behind the passenger side of the dash and check for bad caps.... etc?

Just looking for anyone's experience with fixing the system.

Thanks!
GD

Re: 1986 Performance Sound diagnostics

I got a pair of these coming:

Amazon Amazon

And I'm going to replace all the electrolytic capacitors on the Amplifier board. Rest of the board looks pretty ok.

Hopefully that, and cleaning all the pots gets it going.

Anyone have experience repairing these little amp boards? I may have to call in the big guns - I have a friend that builds custom tube amps on the side for funzies.... he's lethal with a soldering iron. I'm only dangerous.... like pneumonia to the elderly.
