speed sensor questions

i have a 1991 camaro i just ls swapped. my speedo worked only intermittently prior to the swap so i wanted to change replace it anyways. my question is can i use a sensor from something newer that fits the newer plug. i can wire it up in a second if needed but would rather not. the car has a 700r4 with a 411 pcm. thanks

Re: speed sensor questions

Most of the newer generation sensors use a reluctor and pickup system instead of a signal generator.

Re: speed sensor questions

You'll need to stick with the sensor that matches the speedometer and ECM. GM used a variety of different senders for different applications. Some send a sine wave, some a square wave, not to mention different pulses per mile. You can use a converter like an SGI5 to convert the signal, or an aftermarket speedometer that would be compatible.

If you change the sender, there's a pretty good chance you'll have to change the drive "gear" on the output shaft of the trans. Thirdgens use plastic gears retained with a clip, that have to be matched to the tires and gear ratio, pretty much everything else uses a reluctor wheel that's pressed on the shaft.
