Alternator on a toggle switch

New to the 3rd Gen have a 88 Z28 305 tbi car that I’ve recently purchased the car has a toggle switch to turn the alternator on to charge I’ve never seen anything like this before and was wondering has anyone else? And what would be the reason for as for me and my friends we have never seen this before and had us baffled . Any help on this is greatly appreciated and thanks !

What you are seeing is what happens when someone has only half a clue of how automotive electric systems are diagnosed and repaired and tries to repair a problem . Obviously for whatever reason the alternator lost it's key switched power source and Cletus saw fit to use the same toggle switch trick he learned when the electric fan went out (the most common place the toggle switch butchery is employed) rather than do all that fancy "troubleshooting" to properly repair the problem . Looking at your wiring diagram for 1988 , checking the brown wire coming from the fuse labeled "C/H-FAN" with the key on to see if +12V is there would be a first troubleshooting step , after of course isolating the hacked wiring and reestablishing the factory wiring despite Cletus' best intentions and poor execution of repair attempt(s) ....

HAY, I resemble that remark!!!

Actually, Billy Bob did it. Uncle Fester took Cletus' dykes away, won't let him use em for anything except trimming his nose hairs anymore.

Re: Alternator on a toggle switch

I guess I could see this chasing EVERY LAST HRSPERS on the drag strip? If you "turn off" the alternator and just run off the battery you are removing the load from the alternator
