Battery drain only when headlights on and car running

I put a new alternator and battery into my car, if I drive the car without the headlights on, the voltage stays at around 12V but the second I put the headlights on, voltage drops to 0. When I turn the headlights off again, instantly jumps back to 12V. Not affected by rpm

It is not dropping to 0V in reality. Ignore the gage in dash and put a real voltmeter on the battery terminals to figure out what's really happening with system voltage. Could be just a localized problem in the wiring to/from/in gage panel.
