Pop-Up Headlight motor

Hello, I am new here. I've owned my firebird trans am for about 3 years now. Just recently, my right headlight stopped going down sometimes. It goes up just fine, but when i try to put it down it doesn't budge. It goes down after I've been driving for a while when I try again, however a little slower than the left one. I'm thinking its my bushings or gear in the motor, so I've been looking for a replacement set or a new motor entirely, however I can only find sets for 87 - 91 and the motors from 86's do show on some sites but they look like they're not being sold anymore. Will the 87 motor work with the mounting points and harness? Any help is appreciated!

Hi Mike, welcome to TGO. The 87 and up headlight motor is electrically different than your 86, and is not a drop in replacement for your car. The early cars like yours used a set of three relays and four limit switches to control the headlight motors, whereas the later cars used an electronic control module which did away with the separate relays and limit switches. Someone electrically savvy could possibly wire the later system into the earlier car, this would require getting a wiring harness from a later car along with the control module and both headlight motors, and may also require the newer headlight switch.

Thank you for replying. That's good to know, do you know if the bushings and gears are different or the same on the inside, and if that could fix the problem?

Welcome to TGO! it looks like TopDownSolutions does have SOME parts for the 86 headlights (they have great full kits for 87-92). I'm not sure if these particular parts will fix your issue but could be helpful
