Fuel Gauge Problems (Hail Mary Edition)
Hello everyone,
My car is in almost perfect daily driving condition.
The final gremlin I need to face is the fuel gauge.
Ever since I put in a new fuel pump, my fuel gauge has not been reading quite right.
During hard breaking and sometimes at random, the gauge will float up past full.
However other times it seems to settle at where I believe the proper fuel level is.
I've done the test of unplugging the harness on the hump, and it does max out as it's supposed to. I've also tried grounding the harness at an additional location. Naturally, when testing the resistance at the harness, it comes with a general reading of where I would assume the fuel would be. This is an intermittent issue.
I don't want to believe this is a sending unit issue, as it worked fine before I swapped the pumps out.
Any ideas on what could cause this? Or if I am screwed, leading me to pull everything out again?

Sounds to me like it's hanging up physically on something inside the tank. I know it's not what you want to hear, but there's not many other explanations that fit all the facts.

This is a bummer. I guess I'll wait till winter since it's not a totally pertinent issue.
Any suggestions for a good replacement sending unit? If im going back in there, I am replacing it to avoid any more future issues.

No real suggestions. Instinct suggests there's nothing wrong with your SU itself, rather, it's hanging up on something inside the tank. Maybe got bent or something in the process. I'd suggest maybe ordering a new stock one, then dropping the tank BEFORE opening the box, then returning the other if it turns out (as is likely) that there's actually nothing wrong with it. Even a minor restocking charge is a small price to pay for someone to make a part available to you as a "maybe it's this maybe it's that" kind of a deal.
