MSD overheating probs
hey,
i mounted my 6AL box in the driver side fender well (like where a CAI would go) and it looks trick! But, in stop and go traffic i gets HOT AS HELL underneath the hood. I popped my hood after a nice highway cruise and it was cool to the touch. I popped my hood after some traffic and it was hot...REALLY HOT!! I couldnt touch it for more than 2 seconds. Is it ok for these boxes to get that hot? I have heard from a friend that he has seen many "burn up" and quit b/c of the heat. Is it OK for it to be there? I see a lot of guys running them under the hood in place of the washer bottle, etc...and I KNOW it gets just as hot there...EVEN hotter actually....whatcha think?

If it's still working and all your friends have the same thing happen it probably is just how it works... I don't know, I'm just bumping this thread cause I want to know myself

I have had my 6AL mounted behind my dash where the computer used to be (still is officer!!) for 4 years now and never had a problem with it overheating. It gets warm, but not hot,and thats with no airflow over it which worried me at first. Are you running big enough power wires from the battery to run the box,if they are to small they could be causing resistance in it and making it get hot.I ran 10 gauge wires from the battery to the box.The rest of them I ran 16 or 18 gauge wire.
good thought on the wires!! I dont think that is the problem though.....I am using maybee one size down from the guage that it has pre-wired into it...(it was cut short from the previous owner)
Don't expect it to have a long life. The components are probably running on the top end of their temperature range. This can create a number of problems that will shorten their life. On top of that modern circuit board production techniques are not resistant to temperature variations. Every time the unit heats up or cools down it stresses the entire circuit board. This in itself can create problems. For a street car the best place is going to be inside of the car. If that is too difficult then try to fashion some kind of a fresh air duct to help get cooler air around the box. Otherwise run it till it drops. There is a good chance you will get years of service abusing it with heat.
The units itself will run 60-80 degrees hotter then the surrounding area. It will get hot under the hood but is designed to operate under these conditions so you should be fine. One of the 6AL's I have used on basically appliction I have owned for the past 11 years gets very hot.
