Headlights won't obey me!

My head lights won't flip up when I turn them on, (85' Firebird.) They turn on, but not up. After I put them up manually and go to turn them off again, they both flip back down. Any ideas would be appreciated.

It's the relay or the modulator or the motors bearings are worn. Do a search...lots of info on all 3 in past posts. Good Luck! Mine was the modulator. Had to replace.

Just went through this last weekend with my 85 TA. Ended up being 4 separate problems. There are two relays up front, one on each side of the car in the front. One is just in front of the battery, and the other is directly opposite it behind where my air fiter (TPI) would be. There is also another relay on the pass side mounted on the back side of the radiator support. All of these relays are for the headlight setup. When the car was assembled, GM used some kinda goop to keep the contacts from corroding on these relays. Apparently, after many years, this stuff actually gums up the contacts. I ended up disassembling the relays (the top pops off of them) and cleaning them inside and out. This got my headlights to semi function, but erratically. The final problem is my headlight switch. If I just barely push on the top of the switch to cut on the headlights, the motors will raise the headlights, then I just push the switch the rest of the way to cut the lights on. I need to get a new switch, but this gets me by until I find one. Good luck with yours!

85TA377: You don't need a new headlight switch. The switch is desingned so that if you don't push it all the way in, it wil energise the motors and raise the headlights without turning them on. this is so you can replace headlight bulbs with out them being switched on. (Hot!) Push the switch all the way in, and the lights come up and the bulbs go on. At least that's the way my owner's manual says.

If I push the switch in all the way, the lights come on, but do not pop up. That's why I need a new switch.

My bad. I misread your post. Sounds like your switch has a funky contact.
