I hope some one can help me out here. I have an Imerial adjustable thrmostat Pt# 226203. The instructions suck and the diagram is for crap! There is 2 wire connections to make. From my understanding this unit is just a temprature controlled relay when the temprature reaches the set point the relay activates and 12v turn on the fan. So both of the connections on the unit receive 12v one from the ignition and the other goes to the + fan wire and is activated when the temprature reaches xxx* so both are 12v. Is this correct?? The instructions dont say anything at all!!! Its just a picture that suggests that one of the wire connections goes to ground. This would cause the fan to run constantly right???

So before I get more confused and confuse you guys , this should be hooked up 1 wire to 12v source and other wire to fan positive wire and not like the insructions are showing.

Thanks

If it is a relay then it will have a 12v+ in and out as you stated. Then it will run to ground on the third wire. The 12V+in signal is the intermittent signal that activates the relay. If this goes to the fan then when the fan get 12V+ power it will close and you'll get power. Some aftermarket foglights work like this. They only come on when the driving lights come on and send power to the relay. I think that is what you described. Other relays work by having one constant power 12V+ source and an interrupt ground. The ground is interrupted by a sensor. This is how the fan switch works on our cars. It is a temperature sensor that "closes" and grounds the relay when the water reaches XXX degrees. Hope that helps? Good Luck?

Thanks for the reply

I got it figured out and it was how I though it should be hooked up. One wire from 12v other to positive fan wire with no actual wire for ground.
Now I have to chase down a break. When I got every thing all put togather nice the fan stoped working, but since the relay clicks when it reached the set temp I'm thinking theres a break in the wire that goes to the fan. Ahh the joys of 5 extra HP

Thanks again.
