I was wonderin about a 326 pontiac motor
I was gonna put a 305 in my car untill I found a 326 with tranney for $300 I can probley get it for 200 or mabey less. How hard would it be to put this into a 1984 firebird. Would that motor be outta a old TransAm.

Hard enough that it'll probably cost you more to put in a cheap 326 than it would to put in a moderately-priced 305 or 350.
Weight of 326 > weight of 305.
Power of 326 < (most likely) than the 305.
326 uniqueness > uniqueness of SBC.
The V6 to V8 swap is hard enough as it is, you're raising the bar another foot.

Go for it. They put that V8 in everything Pontiac. It's been said before around here. There is only one pontiac engine. That being said, your 326 turns into a 455 with some TLC and lots of $$. Correct me if I'm wrong. You're probably looking at custom motor and tranny mounts too. Plus the pain of switching from a V6 to a V8. Sounds like a big project.

shouldn't be too bad they reproduce those mounts nowadays. the only thing is the tranny prolly a th350 using the B.O.P. pattern i would ditch it in favor of a chevy trans with an adapter...

Only way you can turn a 326 into a 455 is by getting rid of the block and crank. Not much point.
I agree with 5.7, I'd pass on it. For $300 you should be able to find a nice 305. Thats what I paid for my latest used longblock 305, and it runs great.

I hang my head low as I type this........stick with the chevy motor
326 cannot be made into a 455, the bore cannot be made big enough. The 305 can be made to be more powerful, cheaper.
If you want to go poncho, think 400 & up*
*: unless you read the article on JBP's 600+ hp poncho 350, but what average everyday person has that money?
What tranny will bolt up to the poncho motor? any B-O-P bolt pattern bell housing, including the 200-4R, and if you find it, there are trannies w/bolt patterns for B-O-P & Chevy motors. Lots of holes in that thing

Although I think It would pretty kick *** to put in a 326 (theres alot more power there than a 305), It would be more worth while to hunt down a 389 - 455 ci motor, look for '65 and later motors so you can use a later model tranie that will bolt up( ' 64 and earlier and a different bellhousing bolt pattern) unless your buying a motor a tranie together.
