New Z28 Owner w/ a couple Questions

I just bought an 83 Camaro Z28 for a whopping $350. Its in pretty dam good shape for the year and the money. It only has a couple small rust spots that will be taken care of right after I get it running. The kid I bought it off of started swapping in a truck 350 to replace the blown and seized 305 that it came w/ when he got it. Its about halfway in. The computer and related components are basically all gone. It has a Edelbrock carb, no sensors, AIR, etc. I basically have to hook up the ignition, exhaust, driveshaft, and other misc things. But I do have a couple questions. First, since the computer is gone, doesn't that mean that the stock AC delco distrib needs to be replaced??? There won't be any advance, correct? It looks like the 305 ran w/ the Edelbrock carb and stock distrib. The only two wires hooked up are the pink (bat wire) and what looks like to be the tach wire (identified by the tach filter). If this distrib won't work, is there a kit I can add to the stock one to make it a vacumn advance style? And second, what color is the temp sensor wire for the gauge? I can't seem to find it. And on a side note, I do have quite a bit of experience w/ the entire CCC system. I have built a Street/Strip 1988 Monte SS using the original q-jet and distrib w/ a 350HP 350 but really haven't dealt w/ changing one from a CCC system to an old style one. I hope someone cam help. PS-This Message board is great!!

Thanks
Nick

Welcome aboard. I sure hope you don't have emissions inspection, because your proposed system will not pass muster.

You can't convert a CC distributor to vacuum advance. More accurately, it is "vacuum/mechanical" advance, since it has both advance weights and a vacuum can to provide the necessary advance. Just buy a new HEI-type distributor (Summit, Proform, MSD, etc.) or a used non-HEI distributor and put it in.

Don't know about the temp sender question. 800 miles from my car right now, no diagrams with me.

In MA, if you have an 83 or older car, you don't need to pass the sniffer. Thats why I bought it. I'm just gonna have to use this distrib to get it going and then swap it out.

Thanks

The temp sensor wire colors are Yellow and Black

They come out the main harness coming from the passenger side of the car.

No emmsions.....got to love it!

Now, the yellow actually goes to the sender in the drivers side cylinder head and the black is a ground? Correct??? The wiring is suck a mess right now. The exhaust isn't hooked up, neither is the ignition. I hooked up my jump it to the dead battery to find my headlights and tail lights do work. Although, my choke light stayed on inside and my brake light (parking brake engaged) with no key in the ignition. And when I turned the key, the motor barely turned over. It must be all those grounds that I keep finding cut. Oh well, all in good time.

Thanks
Nick
