375 ci in '84, bad starter flywheel probs
I've been posting to my lists all day and not getting any help.
This is an '84 Z28 with a 375 ci (.020 over) destroked 400 block with a 153 tooth flywheel on a int balanced eagle 3.48 crank
It keeps getting worse.
Since I had the header off I figured what the heck, I'd install the stock starter from my 305 and 350 blocks with the same bellhousing and stock 153 tooth flywheel, just to humor myself.
SHOCKER!!!
turn the key and it went WHIIRRRR !
Spinning but no contact!!!
The flywheel is still posterior to the starter drive gear.
the starter isn't getting far enough rearward to engage the teeth (Not a lateral shim problem)
same problem as with the Tilton style.
YIKES
does this mean there is a problem with the location of the flywheel??
We just bolted in a 9lb unit from 10,000 RPM with a stock configuration, and I had the same problem with the stock 30lb flywheel I just removed
Could it be a problem with the 3.48 eagle crank in the 400 block???
Any suggestions???
Freaking Out
Evan
While I'm having problems with the Tilton STYLE of starter I mentioned
earlier, the real culprit seems to be finding choices for a 400 block, 305
Camaro bellhousing with 153 tooth flywheel, a Canton Camaro/Corvette road
race oil Pan with significant kick outs, and Hooker longtube super comp
headers (in a '84 Camaro Chassis)
So... Has anyone ever built a destroked 400 using an internally balanced 153
tooth flywheel and had limited space for a starter because of the pan and
headers?
What starter did you use?
Thanks
Evan
I have a tilton style mini starter,
using it on a 400 block with 153 tooth flywheel
It seems the bendix isn't coming out far enough REARWARD (not lateral shimming problem) to engage the flywheel.
Has anyone ever seen a problem like this before?
Thanks
