V6-v8 Tpi
V6-v8 Tpi
I am sure people have done this swap, but I have the opportunity to obtain a 1987 WS6 350 Formula.
I want to pull the engine and transmission from it and put it in my 1989 Firebird.
The 1989 Firebird has a V6 MPFI that is DOA.
The body is in great condition.
I am using the 87 Formy as a donor car.
The rear end will go into my 91.
Since I have all the parts, what more will I need to do?

What you need: Time, engine cleaner, engine hoist, spring compressor, bandaids, a couple of friends from time-to-time, an understanding wife (if applicable), and time.
What you need to do: Basically anything that attaches to or feeds the engine needs to change - engine mounts, radiator, front springs, transmission, hoses, electrical harness, computer, throttle cables, tachometer, etc., etc., etc.
You're putting an older engine/control system into a newer chassis. Technically, that isn't legal, but you could probably pass it off as an '89 system with the proper underhood stickers. I'm assuming you have emissions inspection/testing there in Lost Wages.

Yes we have emission testing and it shouldn't be too much of a problem.... how much difference is there between and 87 and 89 TPI system? Would it just be a serpentine setup for the 89?
I am thinking that is about the only thing that is different.

I'm not the best candidate to answer specific questions about TPI. Somewhere in '89-'91, they went from MAF to speed density (the '87 will be MAF, that I know - I have one of those setups in the garage attic).
The inspector would have to be unusually sharp to notice the serpentine vs. non-serpentine setup difference.
I'd think it would be worth taking a shot at it. Whatever issues come up should be fairly simple to remedy.

Here's a different idea too, if you have the title to the 87, take the dash apart and get the VIN off without damaging it (should be just two rivets) and swap it onto the 89 and use the 87 title the car would legally become a 87 formula firebird and you would be in the clear.
