Rad Fan Switch on a '79 350?

Hey guys,

The 350 (L48 i think) in my '83 came out of a '79 Camaro Z28. Did this car have an electric fan like my '83?

If it did, were is does the fan switch go on the engine? I've found some kind of plug with a wire running out of it on the drivers side head between the 1st and 3rd cylinders. Is this my fan switch? If not, were does it go?

Thanks in advance

The sensor in the driver's side head, between the #1 & #3 spark plugs, is for the temp gauge.

The fan switch should go in the exact same place on the pass side head, which is between the #6 & #8 spark plugs. You may find that it's ½" pipe on the older heads rather than 3/8" pipe like your fan switch; in that case you'll need an adapter, preferably a brass one, which you can get at the hardware store.

Ok, i've been snooping around under the hood today and looked were RB said there would be a spot for the switch. I asked this question originally because my uncle, who took the knock sensor and fan switch out of my old 305 after we pulled it out, told me to put them on the 350, and that he DID see places for them. Well... the other day, my car was at the shop to have a leaky tire repaired. Since they have the stuff there to install these things (i have no garage, its a canadian winter) i thought i'd have them check it out. They did install the knock sensor, but i was surprized when they told me there was no where to install the fan switch!!

Anyway, i got to snooping around under the hood, and between the #6,8 cylinders there is a huge grub screw type of plug right there!! it looks like it was just put in there when the 350 was taken out of the original car so it would not dump coolant all over the place. Is this were my fan switch is supposed to go??

That's it.....

Your 2 heads are identical. They have all the same holes in all the same places. Where there's nothing else, they have to plug the hole somehow. That's why there's a plug there.

Great.. thanks a TON man... now i just gotta pull the motor again to put it in

Oh well, it was coming out again in the summer anyway.

So, instead of an adapter kinda thing to fit my 305 switch in, could i just use the switch for the '79 Z28?

Or do i need to use the one from my 305?

Sorry, lol, but the electronics on these engines are not my strong point.

No fan switch in a 79, the fan was a mechanical clutch. You'll have to swap in a fan switch. Sorry!!

I used to have a bunch of late 70s Z28s, in fact I traded in a 79 4-speed one for my 83 L69 car. Boy was I glad I did, I haven't looked back for even one millisecond.

Ok, so this is just a drain plug? I thought maybe it was just put in to plug an empty hole in the coolant passages were a switch used to be (sorta like the plugs in the manifolds when you pull the emitions stuff off)

Thanks for clearing that up

No, it's not a drain plug. It serves no purpose other than to simply be there.

Your engine has 2 (hopefully) identical head castings on it. Remember: identical. That means each one is capable of going on either side of the motor. But the car it came in only had one temp sending unit. So they had to put something in the one that doesn't have the temp sending unit in it, to hold the water in.

Ok, gotcha

I didn't realize that both heads were an identical casting, so i didn't think of that, lol.

Thanks

That's OK, sometimes the most obvious things are the easiest to overlook

Hehe, no kidding

I always thought heads were made in pairs and were exact opposites of each other... oh well, learn something new everyday i guess
