327 Help

Ok... I just picked up a 68' 327, 300 hp motor complete for free. It was in a 68 Bel-Air wagon. It has some moisture in it so I need to pull it down, hone it out, and re-ring it etc. I have a couple of questions. Number 1...What kind of compression ratio did these motors have. It has factory 2.02 valve heads so its not a low powered motor. The casting number is 3914660. My dad said this motor was a really high compression motor that would be run on Supreme Leaded gas back in those days. But he doesn't know everything about this motor. So if I build it will it run on pump gas. Also I have a nice edelbrock dual plane intake...Will it work on the 327 since the oil filler is in the front? And last anyone here that has a 327 can you give me some specs on what hp , torque, and how high it will tach. Also what you did to build it up ...Pictures would be nice too...Thanks

I'm putting together a 327 myself. I don't know a lot about them, but I'm putting mine together with flattop pistons , 65cc heads, and about .040 piston to head clearance (zero deck) and depending whose chart you use that will yield a CR of 9 to 9.5/1.
The HP ones of the 60s came with over 10/1 CR and I'm pretty sure they had to have come with domed pistons.
I can remember riding in a few of them when I was a young 'un and being impressed. It's been a while since then and I honestly don't know how they work, firsthand. I'm looking forward to completeing mine tho', I'm hoping it will give me good economy while still allowing a pretty high redline.
I've heard that a 327 will give you a 2-300 higher redline than a similarly equipped 350.
This might be the wrong site to be asking about 327's, but I've spoken to some guys over the phone who seem to be familiar with them.
The oil filler can be relocated to the valve cover, you'll need a breather too.
Good Luck

yes your intake will work....you will run aroumd 9.8 :1 with those heads I believe....how high the power band? Depends on the cam.. Do you have acc. holes on those heads?

You'll have a bit of trouble if you are concerned about trivial things like..... an alternator.

2.02" intake valves are rare in a factory motor. I have yet to see a full-size car that came with them. I had a 68 Impala, the top-of-the-line full-size car, with a 327 4-barrel; it didn't even have double-hump heads, let alone 2.20" valves.

What casting # are the heads? Maybe you can trade them to somebody for some ones that will work in your car. Although that's getting harder to do all the time, nobody wants stuff that won't fit in any car made after 69 except people doing an original type restoration, and unfortunately, nobody's restoring 68 BelAirs that I've seen.

Here's the heads you want. You won't find them on a 327 though. These are 186 castings, from a 69-70 350 or 302. And no, that's not a 327 block, or a 350 either.

Stock up on power steering belts...you can do it without the acc. holes..but it requires much fabrication using the stock assembly
