LT1 Burning up Alternators and will not charge
My LT1 is having some charging issues. Ever since I swaped the motor the alternator has never worked properly. For a short time the alternator worked, but then the regulator went out. Then I got a new one and the same thing happened so here are my questions: I have the big red wire hooked up to the battery right now and the smalller red wire hooked to the wire that the old alternator hooked to. It will not charge. I have read a few posts on here that I need to hook the smaller brown/green wire up from the original motor to a 12 volt switched power source, Is this true? Also where should the smaller red wire hook to then, because from the one post I read mat89rs said something about hooking it to the starter "+" connection via a fusable link. I do not know what this means, does he mean a 12 volt constant source or what? If it is a 12 volt constant source couldnt I just hook the big red wire and small red wire to the same point?

Your best bet would be to get a wiring diagram on an LT1 car and see how it is routed. If my memory serves corret check out www.hpsalvage.com they have a LT1 swap write up.

I have never seen an alternator used on the LT1 and I know nothing about the wiring. However, that won't stop me from giving advice.
If I'm wrong someone can correct me. But until then you might check out this possibility...
There are likely 4 terminals... but I'm not sure.
B+ terminal is the battery wire. But I don't know if it's labeled as B+.
L terminal is the lamp driver for your dash warning light. It is the switched source for which I think you are searching.
P terminal... heck if I know but I suspect it is the phase terminal from one of the stators. It outputs a square wave at 1/2 system voltage. It's not likely you use this.
F terminal... heck if I know again! Maybe it's a remote sense for regulating voltage at the battery. Once again you probably don't use this.
In the end do you get the idea I just don't know? But regardless I suspect you only need the battery connected to the B+ (or whatever they call it) and the dash warning light connected to the L terminal. Until you get better info maybe this will get you going.
By the way, if you connect a power source to the P terminal then you will burn up the stator and fry some diodes.

I burned out a couple of regulators before I figured it out. Mine only had the red wire. I wired it to 12v+ switched with the key with a resistor inline. The resistor is the same resistance as a bulb. Before, I had it wired to 12v+ and that is when it fryed the regulators. I don't know the resistance right now, but can find out for you later.
