Help Me!!!!
Hey everyone, I'm new to all this. Here is what i have:
its a 92 Camaro RS with a 305 TBI. It runs like a champ, but I'm having trouble finding performance up grades for it....and the stuff i do find is eaither not worth it or just cost way too much. I just put a Flow master american thunder series exhaust with 3in tips on. Like i said its a 305 tbi and i would like to go to a 350 or greater and definatly go to a tpi motor. Any ideas on what else i would have to replace by switching? and possible the best places to find what i need to turn this 305 tbi into a 350 tpi? And if it is possible any ideas on what it might cost to make the switch? Thanks in advance. I don't race my car and don't really plan on it, but i just want a car that sounds bad ***(like it does) and that'll turn some heads away from a mustang. Thanks again...Jeff

ANYTHING for a guy who doesn't like mustangs
WELL... I'm there with you... I'm switching from a BONE stock 305 TBI... to a 360 HP 350... When you switch motors, especially when you change injector type YOU WILL have to change the computer (and probably the entire harness and sensors) DEFINITELY when you switch to TPI, YOU already have exhaust (MAKES A HUGE difference).. (does it include headers??) If you switch intake type.. YOU WILL have to do FUEL HOSE plumming.. to fit the hose to the new intake.. If you already have a V-8 and are going to a different one .. all the mount work is DONE... you WONT need to switch engine mount / the accesories (water pump/ alternator/ AC ..etc..) WILL bolt directly to the new engine... I WILL suggest that you shop for a cam.. if you are already going to get a new engine.. CAMs make ALL THE DIFFERENCE in the ENTIRE WORLD. you can get then for economy.. mild power.. performance.. UP TO .. DRAG CAR and CIRCLE TRACK.
EVEN if you don't race.. I think you should look into a cam.. That's about it that you NEED to do.. everything else that you switch is up to you

My exhaust doesn't have headers cause i plan on switching motors so i know slp wants the 1 5/8 headers to go on a 350 but not a 305...so that is definatily getting done with the swap. I figured that the computer and wiring harness would have to be changed. I'm not going to be the one doing the work. I'm a computer guy so I'm just going to have buddy do it for me. The real reason why i wanna swap is becuase of the cam. I love the way my car sounds now and i wanted to put a nice cam to just add to that. But trying to find anything that'll work with a tbi motor is hell. Definatly SLP Headers and a Cam will go with the swap and i'd like to add ram air and then i'm pretty much done. I love my car the way it is, but it has the potential to be a hell of a lot better. I just had the trans rebuilt and they replaced the convert with one for a vette and even with stock gears when you get on it, it still chirps when it shifts to second and sometimes even third. Good luck with your swap...RS's are the way to go!!! Thanks for the info it is really helpful.
I've been looking for cams for the last 3 weeks... if you want , I can give you #'s for cams that will work with computers.. tell me what rpm range you are looking for and I'll let you know... by the way.. is your car roller lifter of just hydrolic... it makes a difference also...

welcome to the boards. You can feel free to use the search feature to find a lot of info on what you are doing here, but I'll give you some basics. If you want a 5.7 TPI then I would just find a whole engine somewhere, but make sure it's complete, or even better yet, a donor car. If you know what you are doing, then get a COMPLETE engine, but if you aren't sure what all is involved with a TPI, then get a donor car. You have to change your fuel pump when going from a TBI to TPI. TPI's flow at considerably higher pressure. You can probably get away with a swap for about $1000 or a little more, since your car is already set up for a V8. If you want to stick with your 305, you can get away with considerably less by just installing the TPI intake and such... You will have to change your ECM and your PROM. Mine was a V6, so I had a little more work to do, plus a new transmission to find, so it cost me a little more.
