carbed 350 swap
i have an 87 firebird with a 350 tpi right now, but in a week or two im going to replace it with a carbed 350 that has 11,000 miles. i was just curious as too what problems i might encounter, if any. is it pretty much a direct swap? do the fuel lines hook up fine? everything on my car is stock. i have a th-700r4 trans now, but i can get a 350 trans along with the engine. will bolting up the older carbed 350 match my 700r4? if i do put the 350 trans on will i need to get a different driveshaft?what are the stock gears for my car? im sure i will need to replace those too once i get the money because this engine is putting out 385 horse. any suggestions on the gears?
i do not know what year the engine is. i know for sure its an older 350, maybe around the 70's
thanks for any input and help
i just wanted too see what u guys who have done this before have to say before me and some friends get too work on it:lala:

I changed from TBI to Carb and am so glad I did. The swap was very easy when you have the parts on hand.
1 Vac Advance dist.
2 3 port Mallory fuel PSI regulator with a return line
3 Carberator
4 intake to match your heads
I felt a small loss of low end torque however above 3500 you will see a huge improvement.
Yes the 700r4 will bolt up fine....I have 3.73 gears in mine and love them.

Oh yeah I knew I would forget something. I don't remember what the pins were on the ecm. But I got a ignition on Hot wire from the computer and found the fuel pump lead going out of the computer and spliced them together. That made the pump come on when the iginiton was truned on. I did place a toggle switch in the line so I could cut it off in case of an emergency.

well the motor im putting on already has carb, vac advance dist. and intake so it sounds like everything should go smoothly, im just gonna go with getting a new mechanical fuel pump to replace the electric one.

I did the same swap and just changed the fuel pump/sender in the tank for a 3rd gen Camaro or 'bird with the carb. You can get to the sender without pulling the rear end. Check the Tech Articles on this website for details.

Using the in tank pump or switching over will not be a very big problem, sounds like you are well on your way to making things easy on youself.
