Help me help my 84'
Help me help my 84'
Ive got an 84' Berlinetta that origanaly had a 2.8 L V-6. I bought the car in 96' from a guy who had dropped a 350 into it but was unable to make it run. I towed the car home and without much trouble had it running and on the road. In the six or so years since, the few problems that have come up Ive been able to cheaply fix on my own. I love this car and now the time has come for me to do a little more with it.
This is were I have a few questions. see I believe that the tranny and rearend are original and my idea is that they should be upgraded. my problem is that I know very little about the drive trane. My question is, how do I tell what type of transmission and rearend Ive currently got and could you give me your opinion on what would be most compatable with my 350 motor.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and Id just like to say that Im really enjoying reading through these forums. I'll no dout learn alot in here.
Thanx

the v6 tranny will not bolt to the v8 un less it was a 5 speed and he changed the bellhousing and then he would of had to change the input shaft on the tranny due to the splining of the clutch and if it was a auto he would of had to swap tranny all together to a 350 turbo or a 700r

If your 84 Berly was originally a V6 & has the factory rear end than it had 3.23 gears in it.
He probably used a 700r4 tranny to keep things simple. If you have 4 gears in the auto (1-2-3-O) than it's a 700R4. If you have 3 gears (1-2-3) than it's Probably a t350 tranny. (or 200R4?)
Your best bet for an upgrade to your car is a shift kit for the tranny, A POSI carrier and new gears. Gears depend on your preferance,....... If you want to drive at very high speed than install some 2.73's and if you want the car to be very quick than use 4.11's
You could probably find a complete POSI/DISK rear with "better" gearing for a decent price and you could upgrade your sloppy rear Drum Brakes to a Disk brake set-up at the same time !
* If your car has a 700R4 tranny in it here is a trick to discover your exact gearing !
Put the car in 3rd gear and drive to 70MPH.
Read your tachometer.
If your tachometer reads 3200 RPM than you have 3.23 gears.
(If your tach reads 3420 RPM than you have 3.42 gears - ECT...)
