Depends on what your state requires. Makes no difference what engine is in the car as long as it meets the states test. Most common oil for GM 3rd Gen cars is 5W30.

The laws and rules vary a little from state to state. My VIN says V6, my emissions print-out says 2.8l V6, and I've passed 3 times now.

Some states require engine s/n verification. I don't have that issue, but some states with high theft rates do.

I used premium pump gas for a couple of weeks before the emissions test. No clue if it made any difference, but I know it helped in California in the early '90's because one particular brand had an oxygenator in thier premium.

I use 5W30 engine oil. I believe that or 10W30 was the factory recommendation for all 3rd gens.

five7kid check your dipstick, its marked with 5W30. That was what GM recommended for 3rd Gen and other GM models.

I hedged a little because the 5W became their standard after the cold snap of the '83/'84 winter. I wasn't completely sure '82 & '83 were 5W.

Regardless, it's a good choice. If it doesn't get especially cold where you are, then 10W-30 is fine as well.
