Not ur everyday LT1 swap question
Not ur everyday LT1 swap question
First off, I've done lots of EFI retro-fits etc...so experience isn't a problem...timing is.
Just got a page from a friend his little brother rolled his '94 Trans Am last night. It's a total loss....but it was a salvage title fixup before ( front end damage fixed right )...so he didn't owe any money or have full coverage. He's going into the Navy soon, so he just wants it gone.
'94 TA, LT1, T56, 3.73 posi ( swapped in ), NICE tan leather interior, has the Firehawk looking rims with new tires.
Car was cammed, aftermarket throttle body, longtubes, aftermarket clutch 78k miles on it.
I can get it CHEAP.
I'm going to get it regardless. Here's my question....
I know where a SUPER clean '91 Forumla TBI 5 speed car is. Just that it's a 305 TBI car LOL....I can get it cheap too...
IF I attempt this, the LT1 / T56 swap in doesn't really perplex me...just a matter of some odds and ends and wiring it up. BUT...if I do this I want to swap in the MAJORITY of the TA's interior including the dash / gauges.
I know it bolts in fine...my question involves sensor / gauge wiring.
If I use the existing '94 TA dash AND harness, would it just be plug and play since I'm installing the LT1 drivetrain? I know there would be some odd stuff out ( airbags etc ) but other than that I'm thinking I can just swap it all in and as far as the PCM and drivetrain is concerned, it will be just a '94 TA.
Any comments here?
Thanks in advance.

If you want to do the drivetrain and entire interior, I think the easiest thing would be to rip out the entire thirdgen dash and harness, put the entire 4th gen dash and harness in, then splice in any required wires such as lights and switches and stuff. You may have better luck posting this in the Electrical and Interior boards. You might also do a search, I know the topic has come up before.

dont forget to cut the hole in the floor bigger to fit the t56. man, a 5 speed car and an lt1 with tranny....perfect man PERFECT. your a lucky guy
Well..I've got the LT1 car...and I got the Firebird. However, some family and other issues have come up...and the fact I don't have any room for the vehicles in the shop I use.
I was in the process of arranging storage, when a friend of a friend called inquiring about the LT1 car. We got to talking, and it turns out he had a '91 Trans Am with a tired 305 / 700. However it's a one family car since his Dad bought it new. I just got through checking it out. He approached the subject of me selling the LT1 car, and I told him I'd already bought the Formula for the swap. We got to talking some more, and he offered to buy both cars. He asked me how much and I told him to make me an offer...he did...and needless to say they are sold.
The wrecked donor TA never even had time to come off the rollback. I let him know about this site, and he's interested in the interior swap. We sort of worked a deal where I'd help him get the install done as time permits, and it helps because he's got a nice, big EMPTY shop at this place. I drove the Formula over to him this morning. It's funny, this thing has over 170k miles, but the interior / exterior are mint. It's a hardtop, and I really did want a T-top car anyway.
I researched the Helms manuals after I posted this , cause I figured why plow new ground if it's been done before...
Seems the wiring would be plug and play if I use the entire gauges / dash / drivetrain from the LT1. Only thing up in the air would be VATS ( would like it to function instead of a simple delete ) airbags, and some of the lights, chassis stuff.
So it's done deal.
IF he starts this project, I'll try to keep everyone updated. I was just told today by his wife LOL that he has a tendency of getting everything to start a project, then gets over his head and dumps everything off cheap when he gets frustrated LOL...so if that's the case, maybe I'll get them back afterall.
Thanks for the input.
