87 trans am LS1 motor swap nightmare

hello everyone im new to thirdgen and needed some help with my motor swap. i have a 87 trans am with digital dash 305 tpi auto. i recently purchased a 00 camaro ss ls1 and six speed from a local junk yard , supposedly it had 19000 miles on it and looked clean and mint. well i pulled the 305 auto on thursday and the wrecked ss was deliverd on sat ,pulled the motor tranny and driveshaft out ,put the ss back togather and sent it back to the juckyard mon morning . had the mounts and crossmember overnighted and started puting in the ls1 .by wedenday the ls1 tranny and driveshaft were in. the next day i went to turn it over and to my surprise it was siezed.well that night i definatly cried myself to sleep. but the next day they said they would return my money and i found another ls1 out of a 02 ss , but with an auto so i swaped trannys with the junk yard ,and are now in the process of putting in the new ls1.

How can such a new engine already be locked up? Geez.... some people just shouldn't have cars, lol (the guy who used to have the SS I mean)

Did you try removing the plugs and spinning it? Perhaps the wreck overheated the engine or ran it upside down.

Can I ask how much the LS1 and T56 cost you from the junkyard? I just know that even finding a TPI setup out of a 3rd gen where I am is next to impossible out of a salvage or junkyard, so I am curious as to what others can get this kind of setup for. Thanks in advance.

well i got the motor 6 speed harness computer and aluminum driveshaft for 3500 , when i found out that the motor was bad i got a ls1 with auto trans computer and harness for 2700 2 days later ,so i returned the bad ls1 to the junk yard , keeping the 6 speed giving them the auto + 500 for the difference in tranny price getting 3000 bacl and paid the private seller 2700 so i make out with 300 plus a driveshaft , i must live were rich kids drive daddys ss into trees .

thats sad, but i know what you mean, only the 2nd time i was at the local strip some kid too the 35 ann t/a up there with absoluetly no driving skills/experience to work with, the t/a had 250 miles on it and at about 100 ft he started losing traction and since he didn't know how to drive he never let out and just smashed into the wall and totalled out the car..sadest day since i've been at the track, the the worst part was, his daddy bought him a new one and he was driving around the next week in it...kids these days!

Re: 87 trans am LS1 motor swap nightmare

I know this thread is extremely old but I have a 87 with digital gauges. Did you get them to work with the swap?
