383 stealth build
383 stealth build
I haven't posted here for a while. I've been busy with our Finnish f-body forum so I really haven't had time.
I thought I'd post alittle info on my 383 build so I could get some feedback and advice from you guys.
This is my first compleate build I'm doing so I would rather call it a learing experience. I experementing here. Noting really new but I just wanted to play with a steath ram setup.
Everything started when I got a good deal on a '88 350 2-main roller block. I allready bought new heads for my old 305 tbi. I was gonna build that thing up but then I came to my senses and started looking for a block. Found the one I have now. It was just machined and I got rods and pistons that were used in it before. the bore was std.
Once i got the block I started planing the bottom end. I ordered a new eagle stroke axel (with advice from a friend) and decided then to make a 383 instead of a 355 which was the first plan. So now i had to sell/scrap the old factory pistons and went with hypereutic kb pistons (17cc d-dome). With the ~60cc chambers (ported and pollished 416's) on the heads that would make a compressin of 9.9:1 which was good since I wanted to avoid octane boosters and knock. I know the heads suck nut my budget didn't include top-notch heads.
On the intake side i went with the Holley Stealth Ram. I'm reaslly no genius the engines but i figured the intake would flow enough air for the 383 up top and the long stoke would take care of the loss of low end torgue. A friend just got his setup running and i guess we were right about that theory. That thing hauls ***. His engine does have heads that flow very well. I'm not expecting that kind of power.
I was doing a swap for a 305 tbi to this setup so i really couldn't use my old ecu. So to correct that problem I orderd a Holley Commander 950 Pro. Only the ecu. I've allready wired allmost the whole thing up. Just need to get the engine in so i can wire up the injectors.
Since i gotta get the car through the sniffer test over here I had to under-cam the engine. Other wise I would have had no way of getting it passed the tests. The cam i wen't with is cranecams 109821. 214/222 @ 0.05" 488/509 w/1.5 rockers and a 112 lsa.
Engine timing is handeled with a doubleroller setup from edelbrock. I'm using a standard 400cid damper and felexplate. I'm in the prosess of balancing the piston rod combinations. Just need to get my rod from the workshop. I'm gonna weigh all of them to the allmost exact same weight with a tollerace of 0.01 grams = 0.00035 ounces. After that the whole setups going to the shop to get the crank balanced with everything. I'm hoping it will stay together to atleast 6k. I'd like to get the engine reving the 6500 which is where the hp curve will really start going down. Upgrading pistons got me almost 2 pounds of turning mass off the crank.
I'm alittle bit worried about my block. Getting the head surface straight they had to machine off 0.2mm = 0.000787 inches. I havent had time to put the engine together so i could check head clearance. My heads are at the shop getting cut for the new 2.02"/1.6" valves. I might have to go with the 1.84" intake valves since the 2.02" valves a shrouded a bit. The reason i got 2.02" & 1.6" valves was cause i got a real deal on used ones.
What do you guys think? questions and feedback is more than welcome.
On a side note. How meny 383 stealth ramed setups are there? I really havent seen alot of 'em. Anybody wanna guess hp & tq?
btw. My spelling sucks

exhaust ports
Here's alittle sample of the head work. Ok, I know its a bit dusty but notice the small clean surface. Thats what the whole exhaust port on every head looks like. the heads got ARP screw in studs now, i'm wating for the valve work.
Here we have a pic of the crack before it was in touched. I've rouded and pollished the couner weights. Still need to take a new pic of it. The rounding and pollishing will drop the spinning mass a bit and the maygor bennefit is ~40% smaller oil drag on the crank. I didn't cut the weights sharp. I just rounded them cause this will not affect oiling of the piston as the v-cut would do.
The block had to be cleard in a few places so the crank would turn. This was done before machining ofcource. I hope my rods don't contact with my cam. Well theres nothing that grinding can't cure
I would post more pics but i don't wan't to upset the mods.

I am 99% done building my 383 HSR engine as well. Here are my specs
383 all forged internals
comp cams 224/230 .503 .510
AFR 190 heads with harland sharp 1.5 rr
SLP 1 3/4 headers
HSR
holley 58MM TB
25lb LS1 injectors--------I may change these for SVO 30lbs
rest of specs are in sig.
I hope she goes like a raped ape. Im waiting on the March billet pulley and bracket setup and the electric water pump before I put the engine back in
