Ls1 swap. Some unanswered questions
Well, i'm thinking about this swap.
I'd like to go with a complete LS1, and 4l60E, with a speartech reworked wire harness.
I have a 86 Iroc, with a 305 TPI, 700r4. I was wondering about the gauges? I guess mine are mechanical, but aren't the newer camaro's electric? Anyone have suggestions of which electronic gauges I could swap out with if so?
Thank you.

The common-sensical thing to do would be to figure out where to put the sensors that go with your dash, so the stock gauges will work. Can't be that hard..... oil pressure for instance isn't an electronic quantity, it's a mechanical one, so all you need is a port to screw the sender into; like the port that the LS1 car's gauge sending unit was in.

Coolant temp requires you add a '98 temp sender to the pax side head, and wire it to your gauge. It will read low, because the resistance ranges aren't exactly the same, but it will give you an indication.
Voltage is voltage, no problem there.
Tach will read way low...LS1 generates a 4cyl waveform...but there are adapters such as the Dakota Digital to correct it.
Speedo is incompatible. Abbott-X or whatever box can translate the LS1's electronic VSS output to a mechanical output you can drive the speedo with, or you can adapt an Autometer electronic speedo to your dash.
Aftermarket gauges are kind of a nightmare...the resistance ranges aren't compatible with the LS1 sending units, and the aftermarket senders are all NPT thread...the LS1 uses metric threads with flat washer seats. Adapter city and very leakage prone.

Thanks for the answers guys. I sort of figured this part would be somewhat of a pain.
Kevininc, you haven't found a good aftermarket speedometer, and the ls1 gauge is a pain and a half to fit in?

The LS1 gauges are not readily useable...they're fed serial data from the PCM, except for the oil pressure gauge. Speedo, tach, voltage, odometer, coolant temp...all fed data via the Class-2 serial bus. No thanks.
