Swap Question

Ok I just bought another Camaro, Im taking the motor and tranny out it and swappin it in my 84Z. Now My question is, What all should i do when i have the whole engine out? I plan on replacing all the gaskets. And also, can i leave the tranny bolted up to the engine when i pull it or should i just unbolt the tranny and drop it then, pull the motor?

Thanks guys.........

This isn't really a "swap" question as defined by the board. But, to answer your questions:

Yes, you can pull the engine and tranny out together. If you use a tilt sling, that is actually the easiest way. You need to have a pretty good excuse to go through the hassle of getting those bellhousing bolts out while the engine is in the car, especially if the tranny is coming out, anyway (for the record, I've done it both ways).

If you can, powerwash everything while the engine is out, including the receiving car's engine compartment. No time like the present to touch up the paint, too.

Replace all "soft goods", such as hoses and belts. Doing the valve stem seals would be easier now than later. If you have performance mods in mind, a cam swap would be easier when the engine is out than when in the car.

I installed my headers when the engine was out of the car (but I had only pulled the engine for the upgrades this go-round). Installed the engine with the headers on. It would be slightly harder to install the engine w/headers if the tranny is also on the engine, but probably still easier than installing headers with the engine/tranny in the car.

Replace all gaskets as you said, replace the freeze plugs, inspect the block. Replace all perishable and wearable items.

I'm just too lazy to move it to the Tech forum, that's all...
