Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
Your 84 LG4 is only rated for 145 or 150 HP, with something like 8.3:1 compression. Same as the one I run:
Stock heads.
Stock intake (cast iron to boot).
DR or DG secondary metering rods in the stock Q-jet.
Stock ignition.
Stock 3.42 rear gears.
Stock peg-leg differential.
Worn-out BFG T/A radials.
Small .420" lift camshaft.
Hedman headers and Y-pipe
Dynomax 2 3/4" catback.
T5.
225,000 miles on engine.

Best ET: 14.49
Best MPH: 98.7

Do not use L98 heads. They have larger chambers that will only lower your already low compression. You should have 416 casting heads. They flow just about as well as the L98's and respond well to porting. The most important thing you could do besides a tune-up is replace every part of the stock exhaust. Headers, high flow cat, Y- pipe, muffler. Don't get it for and LG4 either. Get it for an L98.

Here's one such combo in sig (assuming sea level, and assuming the 2-3 shift problem was cured).

Daily driven, emissions-legal.

Would be even quicker with more stall and more gear.
